10 Questions for Cara!

12 10 2011

While you are new to instructing for KITF, you have been an instructor in the past.  How long were you an instructor or what was your previous experience like?

I was previously an instructor for about a year.  It was a great experience – the workouts were structured very similarly and varied daily, although we didn’t have nearly as much fun as we do at Kick-in-the-Fit.

What is your favorite healthy snack?
A pear, with a small amount of Greek yogurt and a few almonds.

What is your favorite non-healthy snack?
Anything with dark chocolate.

What keeps you active outside of boot camp?

Biking or hiking/camping with my husband.

What is your favorite callisthenic?

Burpees, of course!

What is your favorite workout routine?

TheSandwich!

How would you describe your instruction style?

I hope to challenge campers to push themselves to their edge and beyond – always giving 110%.  I think boot camp is all about challenging yourself, physically and mentally. The harder you push yourself at boot camp, the more confidence and strength you gain to take on any challenge in life.

Do you prefer working out in the cold of winter or the heat of summer?
Definitely the heat of the summer!

What is your favorite thing about being an instructor?

The camaraderie and group workout environment – best way to start your morning!

Which bear is best?

Gummi Bears!  Except not when you’re a camper!

10 Questions For Gary!

30 09 2011

How long have you been an instructor?

A little over a year.

What is your favorite healthy snack?

Almonds!  They taste good, and when I need something to snack on they satisfy my hunger quickly.

What is your favorite non-healthy snack?

Does this mean I have to be put in the Sin Bin?  I can literally sit and eat an entire package of Oreo Cookies with a carton of Half and Half.  I know my left ventricle is closing as I type that, but I love it.  That’s why they are not allowed in home.

What keeps you active outside of boot camp?

I am part of a group of runners that meet up all aroundAtlanta.  I really do enjoy it.

What is your favorite callisthenic?

I would say push-ups.  When I started boot camp, they were such a struggle for me, and now I look forward to doing them.

What is your favorite workout routine?

I would have to say run days are my favorite.  When I started boot camp, I had the hardest time running without having to stop and walk.  This went on for some time and it really frustrated me.  Then finally one day it happened; I ran the entire time.  And it gave me more of a sense of accomplishment to do that than any other achievement or results I have accomplished in boot camp.

How would you describe your instruction style?

I am more of a one on one style of instructor.  I like to try to get to know the boot campers as much as I can and come up along side of them and encourage them through the routines and long runs.  Staying connected with the boot campers is one of the most important things we can do as instructors.  One of the reasons why I kept going back to Kick in the Fit, was because the connection with both instructors and fellow boot campers.

Do you prefer working out in the cold of winter or the heat of summer?

I prefer neither, but if I have to choose, it will be the heat.  As aL.A.person, freezing temperatures are not common.  So when the cold temps come, I want to go into hibernation.

What is your favorite thing about being an instructor?

I hope that we can teach or encourage people to live a healthier life.  ”Take care of yourself now, so no one will have to do it for you when you are old.” Me!

Which bear is best?

California Bear

Road-Trip Runs

20 07 2011

Simple workouts for keeping fit on any vacation. By Jeff Galloway Image by Kennan Harvey From the August 2011 issue of Runner’s World

It can be hard to run when you’re on vacation. The pull to chill out and spend time with family or friends can override your good intentions to maintain your running routine. Fortunately, you can do both without compromising either. Very short running segments of just 10 minutes will maintain most of your running adaptations over a break of five to seven days. So if that’s all you can manage on your time off, don’t worry about it. Here are some stay-fit ideas for wherever you may roam.

AT THE OCEAN
Do a beach run. Follow a run/walk ratio of two minutes running, one minute walking. Run a half mile the first day. Add two to three run/walk segments each day, as time allows.

HIKING
Plan a daily group hike and play “lookout.” Walk briskly ahead of the group for one to two minutes, then run for one to two minutes. Turn around and run back to the group. Take a breather and repeat as often as you can.

ROAD TRIP
Multitask at rest areas. Wear your running gear in the car and when you make pit stops, walk for one to two minutes, then run for five to 10 minutes. Repeat this pattern until it’s time to leave. If you’re stopping for food, get yours to go and spend the time running.

THEME PARK
Do a room-to-ride run. Many hotels connected with parks like Disney World have designated areas for running, and it’s sometimes possible to run from your accommodations to the park. Ask the hotel staff for routes.

STAYCATION
Keep the energy level high. Go on hikes, visit parks, and run alongside your kids as they ride their bikes or skate around the neighborhood or on local paths. If your child plays a sport, run around the field during her practice.

Hands down, the summer.

Seeing campers beat their personal goals.  It is also great getting to see Jason almost every day!
