Instructor Q&A: Ten Questions For Henry

28 07 2011

How long have you been an instructor?
I became an instructor this year after 2 years as a boot camper.

What is your favorite healthy snack?
Definitely grapes…or as I like to call them “Nature’s Candy”

What is your favorite non-healthy snack?
Movie theater popcorn with a pack of Peanut M&M’s mixed in.  Needless to say, I try to stay away from the movie theater.

What keeps you active outside of boot camp?
I like to run and go on the occasional hike.

What is your favorite callisthenic?
Good ol’ fashion push-ups!

What is your favorite workout routine?
Any routine where we form teams and compete against each other.  Gets the fire going!

How would you describe your instruction style?
I would say equal parts cheerleader and trying to be an example.  All this with a little humor thrown in.

Do you prefer working out in the cold of winter or the heat of summer?
The colder the better!  I would rather it be 29 degrees than 92 degrees.

What is your favorite thing about being an instructor?
Getting inspired by the success of the boot campers!  I love the reaction after the PT test at the end of each session.  The look on a boot campers face when they realize they just took 45 seconds of their 880 run time or completed 20 more pushups on their toes is priceless!

Which bear is best?
Dick Buckus!

Road-Trip Runs

20 07 2011

Simple workouts for keeping fit on any vacation. By Jeff Galloway Image by Kennan Harvey From the August 2011 issue of Runner’s World

It can be hard to run when you’re on vacation. The pull to chill out and spend time with family or friends can override your good intentions to maintain your running routine. Fortunately, you can do both without compromising either. Very short running segments of just 10 minutes will maintain most of your running adaptations over a break of five to seven days. So if that’s all you can manage on your time off, don’t worry about it. Here are some stay-fit ideas for wherever you may roam.

AT THE OCEAN
Do a beach run. Follow a run/walk ratio of two minutes running, one minute walking. Run a half mile the first day. Add two to three run/walk segments each day, as time allows.

HIKING
Plan a daily group hike and play “lookout.” Walk briskly ahead of the group for one to two minutes, then run for one to two minutes. Turn around and run back to the group. Take a breather and repeat as often as you can.

ROAD TRIP
Multitask at rest areas. Wear your running gear in the car and when you make pit stops, walk for one to two minutes, then run for five to 10 minutes. Repeat this pattern until it’s time to leave. If you’re stopping for food, get yours to go and spend the time running.

THEME PARK
Do a room-to-ride run. Many hotels connected with parks like Disney World have designated areas for running, and it’s sometimes possible to run from your accommodations to the park. Ask the hotel staff for routes.

STAYCATION
Keep the energy level high. Go on hikes, visit parks, and run alongside your kids as they ride their bikes or skate around the neighborhood or on local paths. If your child plays a sport, run around the field during her practice.

Instructor Q&A: Ten Questions For Brad

30 06 2011

How long have you been an instructor?
I became an instructor in 2010 after 2 years as a camper. Marlis got me started in bootcamp the summer of 2008.

What is your favorite healthy snack?
Almonds and dried cherries, along with string cheese.

What is your favorite non-healthy snack?
Lots of them!  Just about anything fried — from crawfish to chicken to empanadas.

What keeps you active outside of boot camp?
Following around our 1 year-old and playing golf.  I am also busy making and selling hand-made soap, detergent and pet shampoo.

What is your favorite callisthenic?
Man-makers!

What is your favorite workout routine?
I enjoy the long run days and anything that involves a little friendly competition.

How would you describe your instruction style?
I try to make folks push themselves out of their comfort zone by continually challenging them to catch the person just in front of them.  I always try to inject a little humor to lighten the mood and hope folks enjoy my usually lame attempts at 6 AM… I figure if you can get up this early and come out, you should give it your 110% every day.

Do you prefer working out in the cold of winter or the heat of summer?
Hands down, the summer.

What is your favorite thing about being an instructor?
Seeing campers beat their personal goals.  It is also great getting to see Jason almost every day!

Which bear is best?
Smokey.
